Team of the Week: Round 1

Just like Captain Planet, I have combined some of Earth’s greatest powers to put together the best of the best from Round 1 of Super Rugby.

We all know that the first round didn’t really count as there were only two games to chose from. This week weren’t exactly spoiled for choice with some terrible rugby being played on Friday. In fact, after watching Friday’s action I was quite looking forward to the next round of Varsity Cup!

While we reward the top performers with selection into arguably the most prestigious team in world rugby, we also like to reward those who performed to the worst of their abilities. Each week we will hand out the Robbie Fleck Award for the biggest blunder and the Earl Rose Award for the worst individual performance of the week.

Robbie Fleck Award: Jesse Mogg (Brumbies) – for his almighty ‘balls up’ at the death of the Brumbies game when he fumbled the ball on several occasions like a teenager on his first set of breasts before coughing it up to Chris Feauai-Sautia who scored a gift try.

Earl Rose Award: Chris Noakes (Blues) – probably the toughest call of the week. It was a toss up between Tyler Blyendaal (Crusaders) and Noakes for the Earl the Pearl Award. Blyendaal was horrendous but what saved him was that his coach mercifully subbed him at the half. Noakes missed several shots at goal, got charged down by Aaron Smith and then slipped off the tackle to allow him to score. A forgetable evening for a bloke who can play decent rugby at this level. He actually  looks more like a chartered accountant than a rugby player too. Expect Benji Marshall to take his place this weekend.

*Keep an eye out later in the week for an introduction to our Kill’s Corner selection panel….
